CHS Visiting Scholar | Maria Kazanskaya, PhD at Université Paris-Sorbonne
This week, Dr. Maria Kazanskaya, Research Fellow at the Institute for Linguistic Studies in Saint-Petersburg and Assistant Professor of Classics at Saint-Petersburg State University, will be staying at the CHS and using the library. Throughout her academic career, she has studied Herodotus and archaic Greek poetry, in particular from a stylistic and narratological angle. While at the CHS, Dr. Kazanskaya will work on her book on speeches and their interaction with authorial narrative in Herodotus. This work is to be a comprehensive study of all dialogue scenes in the Histories, focusing especially on indirect characterisation of speakers through a delicate balance of authorial remarks, circumstances of dialogue and expressions attributed to the characters. She will also complete an article on oracular stories in the Histories, exploring the ways in which Herodotus’ narrative voice modifies these traditional oral narratives. Dr. Kazanskaya looks forward to discussing her research project with the current fellows at the CHS, who share similar interests.
Dr. Kazanskaya is visiting under a grant, awarded to scholars around the world that could benefit from access to the Center’s library resources and from consulting and working with fellows on a short-term basis. Would you be so kind to tell me how I could follow its development? Will there come a publication, be it electronic or traditional, afterwards? or any discussion forum etc?
Because I’m busy audio-recording many different works of ancient Greek literature (in reconstructed pronunciation) among them also Herodotus’ Histories, it will be a great aid for me to use the high quality information I often find within your publications, discussions and “hangouts” related to the material.
