Please join us at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on Sunday, September 6 at 2:00 p.m. for a performance of Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice presented by Songs of the Goat, featuring a post-show talkback co-organized by Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS).
After the performance, Naomi Weiss (CHS Director) will moderate a conversation with the show’s director Zach Campion, chorus leader and voice coach Elizabeth van den Berg, and scholar of ancient Greek tragedy Francesca Beretta (2026–2027 CHS Fellow). Together, they will discuss the play, its use of myth, and adapting tragedy for the modern stage.

About the Play
In Sarah Ruhl’s imaginative retelling of the classic myth, the story is finally told through the eyes of its heroine. Dying unexpectedly on her wedding day, Eurydice descends into an Underworld more theatrical playground than hellscape. Stripped of her memories and language, and policed by a Chorus of Stones, she reunites with her deceased Father, who tenderly helps her reconstruct her past. But when her husband, Orpheus, plays music beautiful enough to open the gates of hell to rescue her, Eurydice faces a devastating choice: follow the man she married back to a world she doesn’t quite understand, or remain in the safe, familiar embrace of her father in the land of the dead.
Leaning into the influences of Samuel Beckett, Songs of the Goat presents a visceral, ensemble-driven production that strips away classical tropes to ask timeless questions about grief, love, and the enduring power of memory.
After the performance, please join Songs of the Goat and Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) with the show’s director Zach Campion, chorus leader and voice coach Elizabeth van den Berg, and scholars of ancient Greek tragedy Francesca Beretta and Naomi Weiss. Together, they will discuss the play, its use of myth, and adapting tragedy for the modern stage.
About the Panelists
Francesca Beretta is a fellow at the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies. Her research focuses on Greek tragedy, through performance theory, and classical reception.
Zachary Campion is the director of Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl. He is also a Co-Artistic Director at Songs of the Goat and previously served as the Assistant Director for the company’s first production of Ben Power’s Medea.
Elizabeth van den Berg is a Co-Artistic Director at Songs of the Goat. She was a Professor Emeritus of the Theatre Arts Department at McDaniel College where she focused on Ancient Greek tragedy. She serves as the Choragus in this production.
Naomi Weiss is Professor of Classics and Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies. Her research spans ancient Greek tragedy; music and chorality; questions of genre; and the relationship between poetry and pottery.
