The Beauty of Geometry: Two Seminal Works added to the Library Collection

The works of the ancient Greek mathematicians Euclid and Archimedes have been immensely influential since antiquity. Two medieval/renaissance manuscripts and printed works which the library recently acquired in the form of facsimiles were especially important as they were the first Latin translations into a language understood by most European intellectuals of the time as opposed to Greek and Arabic. In addition, the translators not only had to tackle Greek, Arabic, and Latin but also mathematical and astronomical calculations and geometric symbols. Read more

EPIC | Illustrations by Gareth Hinds

This exhibition featured watercolor illustrations from Gareth Hinds’s graphic novel adaptations of the epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey. Hinds uses traditional and digital media to create vivid depictions of the action and emotion in each epic. His dynamic color palettes and careful details differentiate the numerous gods and heroes. From the Depths of the Salt Sea

This exhibit imagines encounters with the Nereids, the daughters of Nereus, who were divine inhabitants of the sea as described in Iliad 18.35-69. These Nereids appear as anthropomorphic figures seemingly at home in the water but obscured for the viewer above the surface by the distorting reflections and refractions of their natural medium.
